I came across a job ad called Professional Vandals...and just loved the title really. It's a nice change from everyone taking job titles so seriously.

Am thinking of creating a strapline for the Software Testing Club - "The online community for professional vandals" :)

Ugh! I would never equate my professional testers with vandals.

I guess it fits in with the other cutesy job titles they posted:
Apprentice Ninja
Unix Pipefitter
Community Gardener

Yet, I wonder why the cute titles aren't applied to developers?

I like it. The full ad doesn't seem to me to be implying that all they're looking for is bad luck and bashing keyboards. They seem clear that they want planning and a meticulous approach. I've seen ads that are a lot worse. I get a strong impression of the company culture from the ad - while I might not want to work there (at this point in time it's important to me to have test colleagues, and this sounds like a lone tester position), at least I have some idea what they'd be like. It looks an awful lot more interesting than most test job ads I see - I get more of an impression that they really want someone flexible who can think about what they're doing than I do when reading some more conventional job adverts.

And heck, at the end of the day, I get paid to play with new toys and break things. That's what it boils down to. I think "Professional Vandal" is at least as good a description for that as Software Quality Assurance Verification Testing Specialist (or whatever random assemblage of words HR pulled out of the pot last time).

Maybe not - vandals break things mindlessly, we break things by using our minds and thinking of creative ways to make things go wrong. And vandals only destroy, we're trying to make things better by finding the problems before the users

The ad also seems to imply that testing is just (bad)luck and bashing keyboards instead of skill and planning
