ElizaF used a Dirty Harry quote to show why testing is cool - which leads nicely into a new discussion of what other quotes from movies could be used.

Some can be used without any changes needed:

Cool Hand Luke - "What we've got here is failure to communicate."

A Few Good Men - "You can't handle the truth!"

Others need a small change

Jaws - "You're gonna need a bigger bug database"

Crocodile Dundee  - “You call that a test? That’s not a test. This is a test”

Forrest Gump - "“My test lead always said life was like a new release, never know what you’re gonna get”"

Any Bond Movie - "The names Bach. James Bach"

Testers are supposedly wannabe/failed developers so cue On the Waterfront

 - "You don't understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a developer. I could've been somebody, instead of a tester, which is what I am."

Field of Dreams - "If you build it, they will come" [and then break it, presumably]

A saying that I put on my blog

Bruce Wayne: You’re vigilantes.  a developer

Henri Ducard: No, no, no. A developer is just a man lost in the scramble for his own gratification. He can be destroyed, or locked up. But if you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to an ideal, and if they can’t stop you, then you become something else entirely.

Bruce Wayne: Which is?

Henri Ducard: A tester, Mr. Wayne.

Fantastic - well I just have to contribute now:

:)

Groucho Marx (as African jungle explorer Captain Geoffrey T. Spaulding)

One morning, I found a bug in my pajamas. How a bug got in my pajamas, I don't know

"One morning I found an elephant in my pajamas. How an elephant got in my pajamas, I don't know

Animal Crackers 1930

What we do in testing echoes in production
"What we do in life echoes in eternity."

Gladiator (2000)

My Father made him a use case he couldn't refuse

"My father made him an offer he couldn't refuse."

I make a bug report he don't refuse
"I make an offer he don't refuse."

And the result is that the software is so good that customers can't refuse
"And the promise is that the deal is so good that we can't refuse."

The Godfather 1972

Oliver Hardy to Stan Laurel:

Well, here's another nice regression run you've gotten me into!

"Well here's another nice mess you got me into"

Sons of the desert 1933

Adam West as Batman (1996)

Somedays you just can't get rid of a bug

"Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb"

From "Support Your Local Sheriff", mayor responding to new sheriff noticing bullet dent in his new badge. Here is the tester equivalent:

"Saved the project? It sure would have if it hadn't been for all those other defects flying in from every which way." -

Love that film. James Garner is so cool

The point is, ladies and gentlemen, that testing, for lack of a better word, is good. Testing is right. Testing works. Testing clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Testing, in all of its forms - testing for life, for money, for love, knowledge - has marked the upward surge of software

"The point is, ladies and gentlemen, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms - greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge - has marked the upward surge of mankind."

Gordon Gekko - Wall Street (1987)

Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry (Det. Harry Callahan) in Magnum Force. "A man's got to know his limitations." Especially when testing boundary values.

"Curiouser and Curiouser"

Alice in "Alice in Wonderland"

Today is a leap day. You know what that means? There Will Be Bugs

Any excuse to dig up a monty python quote - whether it's to do with the Spanish Inquisition and persecuting testers for "missing a fault" or general problems with perception.....

My latest favourite is a variant on the 'dead parrot' sketch and whether my perception of a problem (bug) is the same as the developer's - "it's not a software crash, it's just resting" -> we have different DoDs -> Definitions of Done (Dead)

Others from the life of brian & meaning of life:

Test execution is starting, and there are problems with the test environment.

I'm thinking the opening to Four Weddings and  Funeral, when Hugh Grant realises he's very, very late.
